Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu, feat. Mike Mahaffey

In this BJJ Mental Models Premium audio series, Mike Mahaffey joins us to teach his “Old Bastard” approach to Jiu-Jitsu.

Mike Mahaffey is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Chris and Melissa Haueter, and trains out of Magic BJJ in Michigan. He's best known for his “Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu” framework, which went viral after his appearance on BJJ Mental Models. It's all about that classic, crushing, methodical style that the older grapplers made famous - hence the name.

Full list of episodes:

  • Ep. 1: We Are All Old Bastards
In this first episode of Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu, we posit that we are all "Old Bastards." This isn't a style that's only for older folks - it's a great overall framework for keeping it simple, maximizing economy of motion, and avoiding injury. "Old Bastard" concepts can be bolted into any gameplan, regardless of how young and athletic you may be.

  • Ep. 2: Never Give Up Your Base
In the second episode of Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu, Mike Mahaffey breaks down the first tenet of the OBBJJ philosophy: never give up your base. We use Rob Biernacki's definition of base: the ability to generate and absorb force relative to your goals. One of the first and most paramount considerations for any grappler is maintaining base at all times.

  • Ep. 3: Never Give an Inch Back
In the third episode of Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu, Mike Mahaffey breaks down the second tenet of the OBBJJ philosophy: never give an inch back. When you're an old bastard, you're probably fighting younger bastards, meaning you're fighting with every physical disadvantage imaginable. It's important not to get sucked into the young bastard's game, and one of the key ways to avoid that trap is to never give an inch back.

  • Ep. 4: Make Them Carry Your Weight
In the fourth episode of Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu, Mike Mahaffey breaks down the third tenet of the OBBJJ philosophy: make them carry your weight. Weight isn't the only thing in Jiu-Jitsu, but gravity is the only type of force you can generate for free. And being a bunch of coupon-clipping old bastards, we're always looking for free things!

  • Ep. 5: Old Bastard Injury Prevention
In the fifth and final episode of Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu, Mike Mahaffey explains how old bastards like us can reduce the risk of injury. Injuries always suck, but they're an even bigger problem if you're an old bastard. Mike explains how the Old Bastard Jiu-Jitsu framework develops a style that keeps you safe on the mats.
