The best results come from teams that openly share feedback and criticism without fear of reprisal. If team members are afraid of ridicule for asking a question or punishment for expressing an unpopular opinion, they’ll be less likely to do so. This shuts down productive conversation and reduces opportunities for learning and improvement.
Psychological safety is a requirement for high-performing teams and is just as important in Jiu-Jitsu as in the workplace.
In a gym exhibiting psychological safety:
- team members of all experience levels are not afraid to ask questions
- it’s okay to admit when you don’t understand something
- team members sometimes challenge and disagree with the instructor
- the instructor doesn’t know everything, and that’s okay.
