Psychological Safety

Create an environment where thoughts and opinions can be freely shared.

The best results come from teams that openly share feedback and criticism without fear of reprisal. If team members are afraid of ridicule for asking a question or punishment for expressing an unpopular opinion, they'll be less likely to do so. This shuts down productive conversation and reduces opportunities for learning and improvement.

Psychological safety is a requirement for high-performing teams and is just as important in Jiu-Jitsu as in the workplace.

In a gym exhibiting psychological safety:

  • team members of all experience levels are not afraid to ask questions
  • it's okay to admit when you don't understand something
  • team members sometimes challenge and disagree with the instructor
  • the instructor doesn't know everything, and that's okay.
